FELIPE COHEN: VIGÍLIA
Opening:
October 17th
Felipe Cohen presents in his first exhibition at Galeria Marilia Razuk collages on paper, a video installation and sculptures.
Felipe Cohen’s work has developed based on the tension within the conflict between one art tradition, mainly sculpture, with contemporary forms of arranging objects. This tension is essentially provided by two kinds of articulation: through contact between noble materials (marble, granite, etc.) with everyday, banal objects and materials (cardboard boxes, disposable cups, plastic bags, etc.); and through the updating of a traditional symbolism, one now formalized that is also based on a paradoxical articulation in which very distinct elements are forced into an intimate relationship. Symbols such as the cross, chalice and antique paintings, such as El sueno de Constantino, by Piero della Francesca, are revisited in a way that re-interprets and updates the meanings and problems contained within. Through this articulation, the artist intends to create a space of contamination in which separate eras, materialities and functions show a moment made present through the dialectic movement of these oppositions.
Felipe Cohen has showed his work at important shows, such as Paralela, Sao Paulo (2010) “Milestone” – Edinburgh College of Art, Edimburgh UK (2009) “New Aquisitions” Pinacoteca do Estado de S.
