Born in Fortaleza, in the Northern part of Brazil, José Leonilson moved still very young to São Paulo, where he had the chance to study with some of the most important artists of the time, such as Julio Plaza and Nelson Leirner. Leonilson quickly became one of the leaders of a generation of artists who came of age in the ‘80’s, distinguished by a colorful and vibrant production, mainly focused on painting. Carefully organized in collaboration with the Projeto Leonilson, that manages the estate of the artist, this presentation of his work was conceived as a small survey, and includes some of his characteristic large scale, unstretched paintings from the late ‘80s, a selection of works on paper, and his signature embroideries, which Leonilson started producing at the beginning of the ‘90s, and quickly became his best-known works. Often combining simple images and texts, the embroideries are loosely autobiographical, and document in an almost silent, subtle and poetic way the last years of his short life.

Galeria Marilia Razuk na Art Basel Miami presenting Rodrigo Bueno
Convention Center - South Beach, Miami Beach
“THE REVENANT ROOM”
For the Art Basel Miami Beach 2017, Galeria Marilia Razuk is preparing a solo exhibition of the Brazilian artist Rodrigo Bueno (Campinas, Brazil, 1967).
Especially created for this exhibition, the installation entitled “The Revenant Room”, has been built upon research material findings in Miami during a two- week process – mapped out of the flow of lost identities gathered around the city, in flea markets, donation centers and in the trash.
Always using recovered material from streets, donations or junkyards, Rodrigo Bueno bases his production on the law of abundance. The creative process of “The Revenant Room” has been built by transforming the white space into an extension of his own studio where the visitor is close to the creative process.
Composed by paintings, photographs, old furniture and even organic elements, this proposal follows the artistic research and creative process developed by the artist in recent years. A dialogue of re-signification - a special relationship with the African culture - indicating a return to nature and other dimensions of its phenomena. "My work talks about urban memory through archaeological remains of the city itself. I’m telling the same story in another way, by inserting a reflection about its origin" says Bueno.
“The Revenant Room” hosts a collection of manipulated photographs, reclaimed paintings and prints. Presenting collage and acrylic painting on old pictures as a rebirth of possibilities for soul envisioning.

Everyone can do Nothing
A title we wished to read, or an issue we would like to see discussed is announced in the imagined book cover. What we see in marketing and corporate campaigns and press when speaking of jobs and work is only tied to competitive business trends,– it is about working harder, better and more. In the opposite direction, "Everyone can do Nothing” proposes to stop working and think about one's own life without work. In any way, in a close future there is nothing to do, - less jobs, more dismissal, for more qualified people, faster technologies and more automatization. Under these circumstances, the pressure for work, which falls as responsibility of the individual, becomes a collective issue, we may do nothing, and we may do nothing about it.
