Debora Bolzsoni (Rio de Janeiro, 1975) presents "Passion for Substances," a solo exhibition in Galeria Marilia Razuk at Room 1, from March 27th to May 4th, 2024.

The title of the exhibition was chosen by the artist after encountering the phrase "passion for substances" in a sentence by Jean Baudrillard, a French sociologist and philosopher, quoted by Anne Carson in the book "Autobiography of Red." In the artist's words, "As the exhibition is strongly revealed by the diversity of materials in space, we can think that 'substances' would be closer to the word’s 'moments' or 'instants,' referring to striking materialities due to their immediacy, but which retain something elusive."

Bolzsoni occupies the gallery space with pieces that are embodiments of characters from literature, popular songs, and cinema, such as the work "Geryon," for example, which arises from a Greek myth of a monster who lives on a red island. Or "Tadzio," stripped column made of sand, an idea that has haunted the artist since 2011 inspired by Luchino Visconti's film "Death in Venice."

Considering the design and lines of the gallery's architecture, the works become evocations of personas/subjects, constitutive elements of territories that will potentially be animated. A door with a wick to be lit, a grid that lights up and casts shadows, hands embroidered like flames.

"Passion for Substances" features the interlocution of Wallace Masuko and opens on March 27th, 2024.
