Às Avessas, Ana Dias Batista Solo Show

In Às Avessas (In Reverse), her second solo exhibition at Galeria Marilia Razuk, the artist fromSão Paulo Ana Dias Batista brings an unprecedented installation specifically produced for the gallery modifying the movement in the area and making reference to another kind of business premises, the carpet stores.

Starting from the typical organizational solutions in these stores, the artist makes use of some elements like rugs, carpeting, nylon and silk cord, piled up, rolled up and leaning on walls or laying on moldings and ceilings. Just a few moves and the works overturn these elements sorting them out from their usual destinations and producing new associations: the silk cord turns into a drawing line, rolled up rugs become huge straws, lignings imitate a large TV screen and clipped carpets make, in negative, piles of rugs displayed around. A publication, in the shape of a fabric catalogue, completes the settings articulating some of the narratives built in other works.

Through rebatings and inversions as suggested by the title, the exhibited works propose fiction: transforming the gallery branch of activity.

Ana is also in a solo show in town: 'Common Ground' at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.

About the Artist

Ana stands usual objects out  and creates works that either incorporate them or adopt their shapes or uses, including operations as rescheduling, mimetism, reflection, duplication, inversion and repetition. The critical sense in her works comes from the ambiguity generated by the art object in relation to its original functionality or purpose when re-contextualized.

Graduated in Visual Arts by Universidade de São Paulo, where she also obtained a doctor's degree in 2014. In the same year, participated with a solo project at Pinta London and in Art Public sector at Art Basel Miami Beach, working with scale and function relations referring to amusement parks and other games. In 2016, she took part in a solo project at Art Basel Miami Beach.
