Sergio Romagnolo: Sapatos e Flores (Shoes and Flowers)

From June 1st on, Galeria Marilia Razuk presents the exhibition “Shoes and Flowers”, by Sergio Romagnolo. His second solo show at the gallery displays 11 acrylic paintings and 5 bronze and moulded plastic sculptures.

The idea behind the exhibition isto put very different, almost opposed, images aside: flowers, as gifts for special occasions or even symbols of grief; and shoes, as everyday objects worn out by its frequent use. The shoe images develop into sneakers, boots or flip-flops; the flowers, however, are mostly images of red roses.

In a way, the polarization of themes seeks to surround life from birth to death, from beginning to end, represented by everyday objects of mundane existence.

The paintings are made by two overlaid images of the same object, portrayed in different angles. Therefore, it displays a duplicated figure in two moments, like a damaged image. In addition to the paintings, the show also displays a bronze sculpture portraying a nature size human figure in the center of the room.

About the artist

Sergio Romagnolo (São Paulo, SP, 1957) is a sculptor, painter, designer, multimedia artist and teacher. He studies at Iadê College, in São Paulo, from 1976 to 1977. In 1980, he enters Fine Arts College at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), in São Paulo. He then gets in touch with works by Regina Silveira, Nelson Leirner e Julio Plaza. From 1980 to 1984, he teaches at public and private schools. He teaches painting at FAAP from 1985 to 1986. That very year, he holds his first solo show at Galeria Luisa Strina, in SãoPaulo. In the early 90's he engages in sculpture and works as a teacher in studios and workshops. Participates in São Paulo's Biennial in 1977, 1983, 1987and 1991. In 1999 he completes his masters degree in fine arts at School of Communication and Arts, University of São Paulo (ECA-USP), with the thesis Sculptures: Wrinkles and Allegories (Esculturas: rugas e alegorias). In 2002, he concludes his Ph.D. in fine arts at the same institution with thesis Hollow and Empty in Sculpture (O Vazio e o Oco na Escultura). From 2000 to 2005, he teaches at Faculdade Santa Marcelina, in São Paulo, and from 2007 on at Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP).
