AMILCAR DE CASTRO
Galeria Marília Razuk is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Amilcar de Castro (Paraisópolis, MG, 1920 - Belo Horizonte, MG, 2002). Curated by Rodrigo de Castro, the show reunites a selection of approximately 25 artworks, among corten steel sculptures, paintings made of acrylic on canvas and paper from the 70's and 80's, and a group of paintings on Eucatex.
In these artworks, acrylic paint would be applied with a broom or wide brush replacing the traditional paintbrush, in continuous and spontaneous gestures. Through diverse forms of incision in bi-dimensional space, Amilcar has revealed, with his peculiar constructive language, a notable exercise of freedom.
From three-dimensional artworks, remarkable in the career of Amilcar de Castro, were selected sculptures from the celebre series "Cut and Fold", described by critic Tadeu Chiarelli, as "anonymous bi-dimensional forms and closed in themselves (the rectangle, the circumference), transformed by an action. An action which disrupts the inertia of the matrix-form, projecting it to the three-dimensional, transforming itself and transforming the space around it."
Furthermore, there will be presented sculptures from the series of "Cut". Arising during the 80's, these geometric blocks, made of much thicker and compacted plates, present, beyond the cut, the gesture of displacement of part of the artwork in the space, allowing various possibilities of composition.
