SERGIO ROMAGNOLO

In his first exhibition at Galeria Marilia Razuk, Sergio Romagnolo presents new series of 8 painting made on acrylic on canvas and 4 sculptures of remodelled plastic.

Sergio creates some relations between his artworks and a fiction text which he has been writing since 2004, under the title “A Feiticeira e as Máquinas” (The Bewitched and the Machines), still unfinished. The story revolves around a robotic man and a woman, living on Earth in a near future. The story is a pretext to discuss concepts related to art, love and everyday life.

The paintings present overlays of the same place seen through different angles. They portray cities in Europe such as Prague, Obidos, Orvieto, Paris and Rome, as well as a concert of symphonic orchestra and wrecked cars. Situations casually lived in some dimension by the robotic man and the woman of the fiction.

The sculptures are remodelled directly on ready-made objects such as motorcycle and motors.

The relations between the text and artworks are open and parallel, in a way that one does not illustrate the other, there are moments of proximity and distance in the relation between them. There is a chapter in which the robotic man dreams of seeing himself as a giant laid in a bridge; this image is related to a painting of Romagnolo from 1985. In the other hand, the painting with an over layer of  two images of two crushed cars, has no direct relation with the story. 

The artworks also develop the notion of ready-made and neo-baroque allegories, conceptswhich are present on the research that Romagnolo develops at Unesp Art Institute in São Paulo, where he teaches since 2007.

Sérgio Romagnolo (São Paulo SP 1957) is a sculptor, painter, multimidia artist and professor.

Studies in the College IADE in São Paulo between 1976 and 1977. In 1980, he studied fine arts at Fundação Armando Alvares Hairstyle - FAAP in Sao Paulo. Comes into contact with the work of Regina Silveira, Leirner and Julio Plaza. Between 1980 and 1984, is a teacher in public and private schools. He teaches painting at FAAP between 1985 and 1986. That year, he held his first solo exhibition at Galeria Luisa Strina in São Paulo. In the early 1990s, begins to devote himself to sculpture and works as a teacher at workshops. Participates in the International Biennial of São Paulo in 1977, 1983, 1987 and 1991. In 1999, concludes a master of arts in the School of Communication and Arts, University of São Paulo - ECA / USP, with a dissertation Sculptures: Wrinkles and Allegories, and in 2002, concludes his doctorate in arts at the same institution with a thesis entitled The hollow and empty in Sculpture. Between 2000 and 2005, teaches at Faculdade Santa Marcelina, São Paulo, and in 2007 at Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP.
