José Bechara presents “Líquido do Metal” [“Metal’s Liquid”] at Galeria Marilia Razuk
The artist from Rio presents paintings that draw upon materials such as oxidised copper and steel in canvas and glass, created between 2009 and 2011
São Paulo, August 2011 –José Bechara exhibits “Líquido do Metal” [“Metal’s Liquid”] at Galeria Marilia Razuk, from 15th September to 8th October. The exhibition contains around 10 works and is dedicated to his production for the years 2009 to 2011.
The set of recent works, some of them never before seen, comprises medium and large paintings made with oxidised copper and steel on canvas and wood, which also use the gallery’s actual exhibition areas, from the architecture to the lighting. Other works made based on oxidised steel, but on flat panes of glass, will also be presented. The artist has worked regularly on a series of sculptures and installations, but it is in this exhibition at the Galeria Marilia Razuk that he integrates these techniques into his current paintings.
The exhibition will consist of the Gelosia [Lattice] series, begun in 2009 with paintings. It is a mix of oxidising ferrous emulsion on flat planes of glass and paint (acrylic or vinyl) applied directly to the walls against which the glass panes are hung. The artist explains: “This combination of different planes, that are at times opaque, at others, transparent, results in painting that I choose to name volume painting”, continuing: “It is about a pictorial experience that reinforces the use of the architectural space”.
This series is responsible for directing viewers’ eyes to the painting, the pictorial experience, even though his works are created using a physical, three-dimensional experience.
