CLAUDIO CRETTI: coisa Livre De Coisa

Claudio Cretti will show at the Galeria Marilia Razuk on July 6th with an exhibition titled “Coisa Livre de Coisa” [“Things Free of Things”], which brings together four large oils on paper measuring 150 x 200 cm; the series Bombinhas [Firecrackers], comprising eight small drawings in oil and graphite powder on parchment, measuring 35 x 50 cm; and three sculptures: Dançarina [Dancer], in stainless steel and marble, measuring 40 x 135 x 110 cm, and two untitled pieces, the first of which is in granite and stainless steel, whilst the second is in granite, rubber and metal.

The drawings and sculptures establish a dialogue among themselves, with the drawings at times taking on the aspects of sculpture and, at others, the sculptures embodying characteristics of drawings. This spatial presence is achieved through the volumes of oil paints in the drawings and the marble and granite cylinders in the sculptures.

According to the artist, the sculptures are structures that create architectural situations in space through the bony lines that also function as drawings, adding: “As for the drawings, these remind us both of places and things, objects and geographies, like architecture in proximity to nature”. He titled the exhibition “Coisa Livre de Coisa”, referencing a verse from the poem “Origem” [“Origin”], by Carlos Drummond de Andrade (1962).

The exhibition will be open to the public from July 7th to August 6th.

Claudio Cretti

Born in Belêm, in the Brazilian state of Paraná, in 1964, the artist currently lives and works in São Paulo. This represents his fifth individual showing at the Galeria Marília Razuk. Of his recent individual exhibitions, “Céu Tombado”, Paço das Artes, São Paulo, as an invited artist (2004); "Onde pedra a flora", Estação Pinacoteca, São Paulo (2006); and “Luz de ouvido”, Palácio das Artes, Belo Horizonte (2008), are worthy of special mention.

He has participated in collective exhibitions held at such prestigious venues as the Instituto Tomie Ohtake, MAM SP [São Paulo Museum of Modern Art] and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, among others. In 2004, TV Cultura and the SESI-SENAC organization filmed a documentary about his production for the “O mundo da Arte” [“The World of Art”] series. The artist also works as a professor and researcher. In 2009, he was invited by the Galeria Marilia Razuk to conceive and organize the collective exhibition “Desenhar Lugares”. That same year, he is behind the publication of José Antonio da Silva, which is about his work and is aimed at the children’s market. In 2011, he curates the exhibition “ Assim é, se lhe parece” at Paço das Artes, São Paulo.
