KW INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART - BERLIN
NEW DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON
KW Institute for Contemporary Art is pleased to present the first major retrospective of Brazilian artist Leonilson (1957–1993) in Europe. Leonilson was one of the major exponents of a generation of Brazilian artists known as Geração 80 (80s Generation). After the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship in the mid-1980s, this group of artists celebrated their newly acquired freedom with a gestural, colorful, and expressive style of painting. While American Pop Art appropriated the symbols of a highly industrialized society in the 1980s, the Geração 80s art was firmly critical of society.

"Introduction to Brazilian Art History 1960/90"
Installation, 2015
Introdução à História da Arte Brasileira 1960/90 is an installation consisting of 168 vinyl records starting from the 1960s to 1990s, records that had their covers developed by Brazilian visual artists such as Hélio Oiticica, Regina Vater, Guto Lacaz, Alex Flemming, etc. . The piece of work aims a convergence between visual arts and music, presenting a significant crop of Brazilian history through this collection. The records are arranged to be selected and listened to. Through a record player, the public plays the records in this work. When the disc is removed from the shelf the artist’s name who performed the cover is revealed.

Bringing together a community of artists, botanists, and philosophers, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain echoes the latest scientific research that sheds new light on trees. Organized around several large ensembles of works, the exhibition Trees gives voice to numerous figures who, through their aesthetic or scientific journey, have developed a strong, intimate link with trees, thereby revealing the beauty and biological wealth of these great protagonists of the living world, threatened today with large-scale deforestation.

“THE REVENANT ROOM”
Rodrigo Bueno
For the Art Basel Miami Beach 2017, Galeria Marilia Razuk is preparing a solo exhibition of the Brazilian artist Rodrigo Bueno (Campinas, Brazil, 1967).
Especially created for this exhibition, the installation entitled “The Revenant Room”, has been built upon research material findings in Miami during a two- week process – mapped out of the flow of lost identities gathered around the city, in flea markets, donation centers and in the trash.
Always using recovered material from streets, donations or junkyards, Rodrigo Bueno bases his production on the law of abundance. The creative process of “The Revenant Room” has been built by transforming the white space into an extension of his own studio where the visitor is close to the creative process.
Composed by paintings, photographs, old furniture and even organic elements, this proposal follows the artistic research and creative process developed by the artist in recent years. A dialogue of re-signification - a special relationship with the African culture - indicating a return to nature and other dimensions of its phenomena. "My work talks about urban memory through archaeological remains of the city itself. I’m telling the same story in another way, by inserting a reflection about its origin" says Bueno.
“The Revenant Room” hosts a collection of manipulated photographs, reclaimed paintings and prints. Presenting collage and acrylic painting on old pictures as a rebirth of possibilities for soul envisioning.

Everyone can do Nothing
A title we wished to read, or an issue we would like to see discussed is announced in the imagined book cover. What we see in marketing and corporate campaigns and press when speaking of jobs and work is only tied to competitive business trends,– it is about working harder, better and more. In the opposite direction, "Everyone can do Nothing” proposes to stop working and think about one's own life without work. In any way, in a close future there is nothing to do, - less jobs, more dismissal, for more qualified people, faster technologies and more automatization. Under these circumstances, the pressure for work, which falls as responsibility of the individual, becomes a collective issue, we may do nothing, and we may do nothing about it.
